Fake Siri App Lands On Android Market

Google doesn’t check apps that appear on its Android Market, and in the past this has lead to a number of fake apps appearing on the Android Market, the latest one is called Siri for Android.

The app is published by a developer called ‘Official App’, obviously an attempt to make people thin this is in actual official app, and the developer also has another app called Pinterest, which obviously isn’t from the Pinterest team.

Ed Hardy headphones hope to ink up your ears

Celebrity headphone endorsements are very à la mode right now, and we've seen Ed Hardy's trademark tattoo stylings defacing gadgetry before, so, if you were the one lamenting the glaring omission that was Hardy-branded cans, then he obviously got your letter. The new "Stereo" range evidently refers to the two designs available thus far: Skull and Bones for the over-ears ($66), while your in-ears get some Tiger power ($29). The in-ears also feature a microphone, presumably so you can call for help from the fashion police. Both are available now.

AT&T-branded Nokia Ace possibly leaked in holiday card

Nokia Ace
The grain of salt we're taking this with is roughly boulder-sized but, we have an image of what may very well be the AT&T Nokia Ace -- the rumored LTE-sporting Windows Phone from the Finnish phone maker. It seems that someone sent out a holiday greeting featuring a phone that looks a heck of a lot like the Lumia 800, except it prominently features a Ma-Bell logo, a 4G icon and what appears to be a front facing camera. Of course, what has also been referred to as the Lumia 900 could just as easily be a chop job -- and not a particularly difficult one to pull off at that. Hit up the source link for a couple of more pics of what could be Nokia's first high-end Mango (or, perhaps Tango) offering here in the US.

Droid 4 gets hands-on treatment, but it's simply a dummy unit

The folks over at TechnoBuffalo have just come across a rather interesting specimen -- it's a dummy unit of the forthcoming Droid 4 from Motorola. While its rumored release date has come and gone, non-functional models such as this are commonly offered to consumers in a retail setting to poke and prod to their heart's content. Nonetheless, the hands-on offers a few interesting details, such as a soft touch backside and insight into the redesigned keyboard, which is described as "the best one yet on a Droid handset." Whether we agree with that assertion will be determined come review time, but if you're interested to see the collection of up-close and personal shots with Moto's latest slider, be sure to check the source below.

Gannett outfits newsroom with iPhones, iPadsS6W2HFYT4UKN

USA Today's parent company Gannett has reportedly begun outfitting its news staff with thousands of iPhones and iPads in an attempt to create a mobile newsroom focused on real-time storytelling, social media integration, and a more video-centric approach to the news.
(Credit:
Apple)

The report stems from a memo allegedly sent by U.S. Newspapers Division President Bob Dickey to employees on Wednesday, uncovered by the independently run Gannett Blog, which is tracking the company as well as the digital news transition.
In it we find a rare concession from the traditional news media that technology is changing the way people consume the news. "Readers' speedy adoption of new technology for news consumption creates new opportunities for us to uniquely serve them. To do so, we must ensure our journalists are equipped and trained on the tools to work in new ways."
And that means plenty of new iPhones and iPads.

Dickey specifically cites the iPhone's capability to capture audio and video (along with microphones and other accessories for enhancing that process) and the iPad 2's lightweight portability. Also noted in the memo were MiFi units or tethering via iPhone for mobile Wi-Fi access.
Units are to arrive to publishers and editors sometime in January with company-wide training to tak... [Read more]

Owners of Sony's Tablet S can expect a topping of Ice Cream Sandwich, but the company hasn't yet revealed a specific release date.

Posting on a Sony forum last week, a company rep confirmed that Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, will be available for the Sony tablet and added that the timing and other details will be "announced in due course."

Outfitted with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Sony's 9.4-inch Tablet S hit the market in September. As reviewed by CNET's Donald Bell, the Tablet S is a bit pricey, running $499 for the 16 gigabyte version and $599 for the 32GB model. It's also Wi-Fi only, at least in the United States.

But on the plus side, Sony offers an array of features to expand the use of the tablet, including PlayStation certification for mobile gaming, DLNA video and music streaming, and an integrated universal remote control.

Beyond the Tablet S, Sony is still due to release its Tablet P, an Android-based clamshell device with a hinged pair of 5.5-inch screens, similar in form factor to a Nintendo DS. Son... [Read more]

Samsung ships 1 million Galaxy Note devices in two months

(Credit:
Samsung)

Samsung said it has shipped one million Galaxy Notes since the mobile gadget hit the market in late October. But the electronics giant didn't say how many it has actually sold.

Part smartphone and part tablet, the Note has seen a rise in sales across Europe and Asia, particularly France, Germany, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, according to a Samsung press release displayed today on Flickr. Samsung called the Note's sales "notable" since the device is creating a new market for a cross between a phone and tablet.

The Note sailed to the shores of the U.K. in mid-November, further contributing to its sales. Though U.S. consumers are still Note-less, Samsung has confirmed that a U.S. launch is in the works for next year but hasn't yet revealed a specific date.

First shown off at the IFA Electronics Show in early September, the Note functions and i... [Read more]

Netbooks get faster but less popular, at least in the U.S.

Netbooks will get a boost from faster Intel silicon. The question is, does anybody still care?

Intel's new Cedar Trail silicon for Netbooks will endow new models with up to 18 percent better overall performance, including a two-fold increase in graphics speed while maintaining long battery life, according to Intel.

Windows 7-based Netbooks typically sport 10-inch screens, are under three pounds, boast up to ten hours of battery life, and priced below $400.

Netbooks are not designed for high-end productivity like photo editing or demanding games, as the Atom processor in the Windows environment is built for power efficiency, not speed.

Netbooks get faster with new Intel Atom processors but the compact laptops are not very important anymore for markets like the U.S.
(Credit:

"We're trying to show that netbooks have pockets of interest and momentum," Mark Miller, a marketing executive for netbook processors at Intel, told CNET.

Though there is a decline in netbook sales in the U.S., Western Europe, and Japan, in emerging countries the netbook is gaining traction, Miller said. "There is a long-term sustainable business driven primarily by these emerging markets."

U.S. demand for netbooks has fallen thanks to Apple's iP... [Read more]

1 million Galaxy Notes shipped worldwide, US fans throw money at their screens

The Galaxy Note, Samsung's unconventional powerhouse, has managed to ship 1 million units in under two months. While eager US customers still wait for the 5.3-inch tabletphone hybrid to arrive on their shores, the Galaxy Note has apparently struck a chord in Europe and Asia. The number of units shipped is always more substantial than the number devices out there in end-users' (preferably large) hands, but it bodes well for the device's eventual reception in the US. Now, whether it will include an LTE radio, we'll have to wait and see.

Verzo Kinzo unboxing and impressions (video)

Yes, the Verzo Kinzo is real! That Americano-Czech Android smartphone with mid-range specs that went on sale in November with a ludicrous $459 price tag only to be hastily relaunched earlier this month for a slightly more digestible $359 is not a giant farce. (Well, maybe it is.) It left the ethereal world of rendered computer graphics and landed in our mitts just in time for the holidays. To be specific, we received the pricier $384 Verzo Kinzo Plus GPS package, which includes a voucher for Sygic's off-line navigation app and a gaudy, Star Trek-inspired car holder. After spending a few days with the handset we are able to report that it isn't particularly impressive in this day and age but isn't completely horrible either -- not to mention the faux-Vertu packaging and branding which are rather, well... unique. So why not grab some leftover eggnog, and join us after the break for our unboxing and impressions?

Amazon marks 'best holiday' for Kindle devices, fills stockings full of cash

It was yet another solid year for Amazon's Kindle family of products. The mega online retailer sent out its yearly post-Christmas card, bragging about moving "well over one million Kindle devices per week" for December, making it the best holiday yet for the e-reader / tablet line, according to the company. Three Kindles held the top spots on the site's list of best sellers, led by the Fire, the Touch and the plain old fourth generation Kindle. No exact numbers from Amazon, as per usual, but it looks to have been a pretty green Christmas for Bezos and co. Jingle all the way to the celebratory press release after the jump.

The morning after: PlayStation Vita sales go cold during first full week in Japan

It's hard to set much store by early sales performance, particularly after the evergreen 3DS faced such a rocky road. Nevertheless, the Vita's latest stats do look disappointing for such a highly anticipated -- not to mention high-quality -- console: after shifting a remarkable 321,000 units during its first two days on sale in Japan, it could only muster 72,500 in the whole week between December 19th and Christmas Day. In comparison, the PS3 sold 76,000 units during the same period, while the 3DS rang up half a million. This doesn't necessarily reflect a lack of interest, however: there have been stock shortages, and it's also possible that buyers are waiting to make sure that all the launch bugs get cleaned up. As for us, our alarms remain firmly set for February 22nd.

Iconia Tab A200 and A700 slates head to CES, make a pitstop in Russia

Acer already spilled the beans on its Iconia Tab A200, a 10.1-inch slab powered by NVIDIA's 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, but whatever happened to that Tegra 3 touting A700? It went to Russia, of course. According to NoMobile.ru, the A200's slimmer, but more powerful brother will debut at CES 2012 next month. The Ruskie site pegs the tablet's 1920 x 1200 resolution screen at 10.1-inches, which is bordered by SIM and micro-USB slots, a dedicated rotation lock switch, the standard volume rockers, an audio jack and a micro-HDMI port. On its rear they found a textured back garnished with a five megapixel camera sporting a built-in flash -- the whole unit weights 650 grams (1.43 pounds) and boasts a ten hour battery life. When can we see it? At CES, says NoMobile.ru, or in stores if you're willing to wait until March. We'll poke around Acer's offerings next month and let you know what we find. Can't wait? Follow the source link below for a few more pictures.

Kindle Fire is shown running Android Ice Cream Sandwich

Ice Cream Sandwich stays cool, even on a Fire.

(Credit:
Screenshot by Eric Mack / CNET)

Apparently the Kindle Fire won't melt Android Ice Cream Sandwich, at least that's what I took from a video showing Android 4.0 running on the Amazon tablet.

A very early version of a ROM based on CyanogenMod 9 for the Fire has been getting its tires kicked over on the XDA developers forum. Forum user Jackpotclavin released a pre-alpha of the ROM as a sort of Christmas present for the developer community, but there's no guarantee you won't want to return this gift, as the developers involved openly admit it's still a bit buggy and in need of further development.

Check out the video below to see Ice Cream Sandwich in action on the Kindle Fire. You'll notice that it pretty much wipes out all the Amazon customization and integration and isn't fully usable just yet, but promising for Android fanboys nonetheless.

These eco-friendly 'green' earbuds deliver oodles of detail

Thinksound's awesome little ts02 in-ear headphones($100) knocked me out in March, so I was eager to hear the company's new model, the ms01.

It doesn't look a whole lot different than the ts02, but that's not a bad thing. Both models are smaller and more comfortable than most in-ears, and both block a good amount of external noise. Almost as much as a noise-canceling headphone, and unlike NC models, the ms01 doesn't run on batteries.

Microsoft eyeing cloud backup service for its phones

Microsoft aims to help Windows Phone owners safely store their personal data on its servers as part of a future service.

An software engineering job listing picked up by WMPoweruser seeks someone to join its "Windows Phone Backup, Migrate, and Restore team."

"Our goal is to ensure that no matter if someone loses their phone, drops their phone in a lake, buys a new windows phone, or just has their toddler wipe their phone by entering the wrong PIN over and over, a user can quickly and seamlessly get their phone back to a good state," the listing reads.

In the posting Microsoft notes that those aforementioned features are for "the next version of Windows Phone," which puts into question whether the feature will be available for current Windows Phone owners.

As it stands, Microsoft's current back-up solution for its phones is tied to its Zune software, meaning users must go back to their home computer to get a back-up. Competitors like Apple and Google have moved farther away from this, offering cloud-based backup services for their mobile operating systems.

In Google's case, the phone will re-download apps, app data ... [Read more]

M-Edge suit accuses Amazon of corporate bullying, patent infringement over Kindle cases

Case maker M-Edge filed suit with a Maryland court last week accusing Amazon of "unlawful corporate bullying" and patent infringement relating to the company's line of Kindle cases. According to M-Edge, the company signed a three-year agreement with Amazon in November 2009 for a 15-percent sales commission, only to have the retail giant demand a new contract with a 32-percent cut a mere two month later. A lawyer for M-Edge told The Wall Street Journal that Amazon punished the case maker over its refusal to play ball, after threats of burying the company's products on its site. According to the filing, M-Edge finally caved and signed a new contract in July of last year, given the fact that Amazon apparently drives nearly 90-percent of the small company's revenue. The suit also accuses Amazon of "knocking off" its reading light-packing covers with lighted jacket designs for the Kindle 3. Amazon, for its part, has refused to comment on the matter.
