T-Mobile G2x review

It's only been a few weeks since the Optimus 2X crossed the desk of our European review bureau as the first known dual-core smartphone in the universe. Now LG's wunderkind has made its way across the pond and landed on US soil to be reborn as the G2x on T-Mobile. While the hardware remains the same elegant Tegra 2-infused slab of glass, metal and plastic, the software has been liberated from the shackles of LG's UI customizations into a serving of vanilla Froyo -- the exact same approach T-Mobile took when it introduced the Desire Z as the G2 without HTC's custom Sense skin last fall. Unlike previous G-series phones, the G2x ditches the physical keyboard for a 4-inch WVGA display with HDMI output and an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture. Beyond the transition from messaging-centric device to multimedia powerhouse, what else is different about the hardware? T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide gets PC-assisted Froyo update

Gingerbread may not be a very likely option, but T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide users can now get a dessert of another sort (albeit a slightly stale one), as the phone has finally received an update to Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo). Unfortunately, there's apparently no over-the-air update planned, and the software required for the installation is Windows-only, so anyone with a Mac looking to upgrade will have to find a PC-using friend willing to help them out. HTC Flyer Headed To T-Mobile

Last week we saw a new version of the HTC Flyer for the US, the HTC EVO View, which is a WiMAX enabled version of the Flyer that will be available with mobile operator Sprint in the US.

Now it looks like the HTC Flyer will also be headed to another mobile network in the US, T-Mobile and it is expected to hit T-Mobile some time this summer.

The HTC Flyer features a 7 inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, there is also a1.5GHz Qualcomm processor and it will come with Android 2.4 Gingerbread when it goes on sale.

There are also two separate camera’s on the Flyer a five megapixel version on the back and a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front, plus a 4,000mAh battery, 3G and WiFi connectivity.

Nokia Astound coming via T-Mobile on April 6

Nokia’s utmost loyalty towards the Symbian platform further extends with its newest offering dubbed Astound that is slated for release in the USA starting April 6 via T-Mobile. The all new Nokia Astound promises an improved user interface alongside 8 megapixel camera with dual-flash LED, 720p HD camera and a 3.5-inch capacitive touch AMOLED screen.

The device enables users to seamlessly stay connected. It features three fully customizable homescreens, allowing quick access to email, check the latest from Facebook and Twitter. It comes pre-loaded with games like Fruit Ninja and provides access to the latest music with the Slacker Radio app.

Nokia Astound’s AMOLED touchscreen has been safeguarded with ultrathin, damage-resistant glass alongside surrounded by stainless steel. It equips the latest commercial version of Ovi Maps along with free voice-guided and turn-by-turn navigation. The handset also brings in automotive grade maps for the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean while it tags along refined search engines and Wi-Fi positioning and maps of public transit lines. Consumers can discover new apps, games and themes from the Ovi Store. The Nokia Astound was showcased at the CTIA Wireless in Orlando, Fla.

The Nokia Astound will be available across the globe starting April 6 through T-Mobile retail stores and online for a price of $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year service agreement.

T-Mobile G2x from LG hands-on

We reported the rumors, we spied it on the show floor at CTIA yesterday, and T-Mobile finally announced it this morning. Well here it is now in the flesh: the G2x from LG. The hardware looks pretty much identical to its sibling, the LG Optimus 2X that we reviewed recently, but instead of featuring a custom UI, the software is plain Froyo (Android 2.2.2). Another major difference is the inclusion of "4G" support, which is missing from the Optimus 2X. Tegra Zone comes pre-installed, along with the usual T-Mobile add-ons like WiFi calling. Overall, the G2x made a very strong first impression, and we're looking forward to getting more in-depth coverage soon. Take a look at our gallery below, and hit the break for our hands-on video.

Update: It turns out the "4G" radio in the G2x is quadband (2100 / 1900 / 1700 / 850MHz) but strangely, it's limited to 14.4Mbps downlink speeds. Apparently, this also applies to the T-Mobile G-Slate. We're reaching out to T-Mobile to check if the G2x radio is HSPA+ or merely just HSPA.

Nokia Astound for T-Mobile coming April 6th for $80 (hands-on with video)

Want to know where those next 150 million Symbian devices that Nokia wants to sell are going to come from? Well, here's a little sliver of your answer. We've just swung by Nokia's swank dinner event well outside CTIA's convention center grounds in Orlando tonight to check out the official introduction of the rumored Astound for T-Mobile. Make no mistake -- this is a straight-up C7 in every sense of the word, featuring the same 3.5-inch AMOLED display, 8 megapixel camera, and 720p capture as the original announced last year atop Symbian^3 -- so the only real differences are the T-Mobile branding (or should that be AT&T branding?) tastefully featured along the bottom chin and a slight platform bump to Symbian^3.1, which we're told features "some, but not all" of the PR2.0 update's features like portrait QWERTY support and a refreshed browser. Interestingly, the carrier will be offering WiFi calling on this one -- just as it did on the E73 Mode -- and you'll be able to do unrestricted video calling over Qik thanks to the front-facing cam.
